Abstract

567,763. Drying coated or impregnated surfaces. NICHOLSON, J. C., and PLASTIC SPRAY, Ltd. June 28. 1943, No. 10441. [Class 34 (ii)] [Also in Group XI] Surfaces or surface materials coated and/or impregnated with plastic materials, including natural or synthetic rubber, are dried and/or cured by subjecting the materials to treatment by radiant heat from one or more gas-heated refractory or metallic elements, concurrently with treatment by a blowing or convection effect produced by the impingement or contact of the resultant hot products of combustion on said materials. The radiant heat may be applied by a portable burner comprising a metal box a which houses an elongated block b of refractory material formed with a number of bores c, each of the latter having located at its inner end a burner nozzle d and all the said nozzles d being supplied with gas from a mixing tube e provided with a gas inlet f and an air inlet g. The burner may be fitted with a handle h strapped to the mixing tube e, and deflector plates i are secured to the box a for directing the hot gases of combustion on to the material under treatment; the material may also be subjected to a supplementary air blast. If desired, instead of the burner being in the form of a hand tool to be traversed over the surface to be treated, one or more burners may be mounted or installed in a chamber or tunnel in which the material to be treated is located or through which it is progressively fed.
