Abstract
1,203,221. Drying coated strips; continuous strip heating furnaces. B. & K. MACHINERY INTERNATIONAL Ltd. 25 Aug., 1967 [27 May, 1966 (3)], Nos. 23976/66, 23977/66 and 23978/66. Headings F4B and F4G. In an apparatus for drying a coated strip, the strip is passed through an oven chamber where it is heated to evaporate solvent in the coating, by burners which are controlled by means sensing the temperature of the strip, and by a heated air stream passing through the chamber, the solvent vapours are carried by the air stream to a solvent burning means where the vapours are oxidized and the resultant oxdized mixture is passed through heat exchange means to heat air entering the chamber. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1 a painted continuous metal strip is dried and cured by being passed through solvent removing oven chambers 11, 12 and curing oven chamber 13. The evaporated solvent is conveyed by air which has been preheated in heat exchangers 26, 30, being pumped through the oven chambers 11, 12 to burner unit 24 in which the solvent is oxidized. The oxidized effluent is used as the heating medium in heat exchanger 26 and then exhausted to the atmosphere. The supply of fuel to the gas fired infra-red burners 32, 33, which are pivotally mounted such that they can be activated to be directed towards or away from the strip, is controlled by means 58 sensing the temperature of the strip and means (not shown) for sensing the temperature of the ambient air in the oven chambers. The oven chambers have adjustable vents 63. The effluent burner unit 24 may comprise two porous plates 64 (e.g. silicone carbide or aluminium oxide) adjustable gas burners 68 and adjustable inlet 82. The unit 24 may comprise one porous plate (Fig. 7 not shown) or a porous barrier 77 (Fig. 8). When the strip is stopped, burners 36, 37 are moved away therefrom by hydraulic motors 34, 35 actuating linkage 38, 39 under control of a valve (54, Fig. 4) and a switch (56).
