Abstract

1412614 Continuous strip heating furnaces; gas fired radiant heaters C S FLYNN 6 Nov 1972 [19 Nov 1971] 51081/72 Headings F4B and F4G A coating on a metal strip W is heat treated by passing the strip through one (Fig. 3) or five (Fig. 1, not shown) heating chambers 16 each provided with gas burner assemblies 38, 38<SP>1</SP> comprising series of burner units 67 (Fig. 4) arranged along and supplied by laterallyextending gas manifolds 44, 44<SP>1</SP> each burner unit 67 comprising a porous combustion layer 65 held on a housing 41 by a screen 47, air curtains being produced by nozzles 29, 29<SP>1</SP> at the inlet and exit of the strip W from the apparatus. Elongate baffles 40 and air nozzle assemblies 42 entrain the hot gases from the burners into the chamber 16. Before treatment in the chamber 16 the strip W may pass between air jet nozzles 52, 52<SP>1</SP> to remove volatile substances which are drawn off by a fan and burned in burner. After treatment in the chamber 16 further heat treatment may be provided in a chamber 20 by burner assemblies 56, 56<SP>1</SP> (similar to 38, 38<SP>1</SP>).
