567,434. Air filters. HEATHER, F. June 22, 1943, No. 10060. [Class 8 (ii)] An air filter is fitted to the cylinder or cylinder block of an internal-combustion engine, and its casing wall is formed with an opening normally closed by a cover displaceable to facilitate lubrication of the inlet valves. The filter may comprise a perforated casing divided longitudinally into compartments into which brushes with bristles of any material are inserted and so compressed as to act as filters. Openings adjacent the inlet valves are formed in the casing and closed by perforated covers 16. These covers are supported by springs 28 passing through lugs on the covers or lying on inwardly-projecting lips on the covers and attached at their ends to transverse rods 22 connected to arms 20, 21 pivoted to a supporting plate 17 ; springs 29 surrounding the ends of springs 28 centre the cover-plates. By pushing on the plates with the nozzle of an oil container, the plates are pushed inwards against the springs, and the nozzle may be passed through the openings and holes 15 in the base to oil the valves. In another form, the covers may be flexibly supported at their lower edges and formed with openings closed by leaf springs pushed aside by the nozzle. Specification 505,917 is referred to.
