Abstract

567,082. Jet propulsion. MICUTA, G. R. July 3, 1943, No. 10829. Convention date, June 24, 1942. [Class 114] In a jet propulsion engine particularly suitable for submarines, a piston 36 is moved upwards by the water pressure outside the submarine, causing a jet of water to be discharged through a passage 33 to propel the submarine, and is restored to its original position by compressed gas being admitted to a space 49. During the upward movement the gas in the space 49 escapes through an outlet to its supply source, the same gas being used over and over again. The gas used may be helium. The operation of the inlet and outlet valves to the space 49 as well as the controlling of two compressors for driving the gas into and out of the space 49 is effected at appropriate times by electromagnets controlled by switches 60, 61 operated at the beginning and end of the stroke of the piston 36. The direction of the jet may be varied so as to steer the submarine and additional jets may be provided to provide reverse or upward or downward thrust.
