Abstract

Machines and apparatus.-A valve or other moving member of the type in which fluid pressure is caused to act on a differential piston one part of which is always under pressure, while the other part is only under pressure when it is required to move the valve in the corresponding direction, is provided with damping-pistons for cushioning the differential piston at the ends of its stroke. A casing a is provided with a bearing c at one end and a screwed plug g at the other. The chamber f is tapered at o and p and is provided with a fluid inlet i. The differential ram b, e carries damping-pistons k, l, having valve members q secured by screws s. The adjacent faces of the pistons k, l are of equal area, but the face m of the piston k is of greater area than the face n of the piston l. A pump supplies pressure fluid to the chamber f continuously, and to the chamber h intermittently by means of a valve when it is required to move the valve upwards. At the end of each stroke the movement is damped by the action of the pistons k, l, in conjunction with the tapering walls o, p. Alternatively, only one damping-piston may be used.
