988,857. Reciprocating pumps. J. ENDRES. June 23, 1961 [June 24, 1960], No. 22897/61. Heading FIA. [Also in Division B7] A double acting piston pump for an hydraulic jet drive for watercraft comprises a pump cylinder 8, a hollow piston 9 reciprocable within the cylinder, the radially extending walls 4 and 5 of the piston being inclined to planes transverse to the cylinder, inlet duct means 6 for introducing water to the hollow interior of the piston, valve means, e.g. flap valves 1 and 2, in each of the walls of the piston adapted to permit water to flow from the hollow interior through the respective walls but to prevent water from flowing back to the interior, two outlet ducts 16 and 19 respectively extending from the two sides of the piston which two ducts are arranged to discharge water in the same direction as each other to provide the jet drive, and drive means for reciprocating the piston. More than one piston may be provided in a pump unit, and a plurality of units can be synchronously operated. The drive means for reciprocating the piston may comprise an I.C. engine of the directly coupled or free piston type, or means driven by propellant gas compressed air or liquid, or steam, operating in a closed or open cycle, and can be disposed inside the unit housing the pump.
