Abstract

754,910. Diaphragm pumps. SCOTT & WILLIAMS, Inc. Sept. 28, 1954, No. 27997/54. Class 102(1). A diaphragm pump comprises twin chambers each fitted with a flexible member 100 and provided with inlet and outlet valves 128, 132. The flexible members are expanded and contracted by controlling the supply and exhaust of pressure liquid by a distributing valve 28 reciprocated by a slide 16 connected by a rod 12 to a crank 10 driven through reduction gearing 6 by a motor 2 which also drives the pump 23 for supplying the pressure liquid to the port 40. The piston elements 30, 32 control ports 42, 44 connected to lines 99, 97 leading to the flexible chambers. Both ports 42, 44 are arranged to be open at the same time and to prevent flow from one flexible chamber to the other through the valve 28, non-return valves 74, 76 are provided in the lines 99, 97. Exhaust ports 58, 60 and 50, 52 are also controlled by the piston elements 30, 32 and balancing piston elements 34, 36 are provided on the valve 28. Each flexible member 100 comprises flexible thimbles 106, 110 connected to bases 104, 108 and surrounding a perforated tube 96. A passage 116 leads to a chamber between the bases 104, 108 and the presence of liquid in this passage would indicate the rupture of one of the thimbles. Specification 683,873 is referred to.
