Abstract
566,830. Brakes; wheels. MESSIER AIRCRAFT EQUIPMENT, Ltd., and CONWAY, H. G. June 15, 1943, No. 9600. [Classes 103 (i) and 144 (i)] Aircraft or other vehicle wheels or the axles thereof are provided with an impeller gear driven from the wheel for driving a current of cooling air through passages formed between the brake drum and the tyre rim. According to Fig. 1, the wheel comprises castings 1, 2 bolted together and supported by radial ribs 6 from brake drums 7 mounted by bearings 3 upon a fixed axle 4. Gear-wheels 11 carried by a member 10 fixed to the axle mesh with ring gears 12 on the rims 1, 2 and with the hubs 15 of impeller blades 17 which thus draw in air through openings 16 and force it between the rims and the drums 7. In another construction, Fig. 2, flanges 20 on the brake drums are extended inwardly to meet at the centre line of the wheel and are formed with a ring gear with which and a toothed wheel 22 on the shaft of impellers 17 arranged within the axle 19, gear-wheels 11 engage. The impellers drive cooling air currents in the directions shown by the arrows. In a modification of this construction, the axle is in two parts and the wheels 11 are mounted upon bolts that secure the parts together. According to the Provisional Specification, the impeller blades in the construction shown in Fig. 1 may be helical. Specification 527,034 is referred to.
