Abstract
An insulating composition adapted to be used as an insulator in electrical devices such as transformers, junction boxes, &c., in which a liquid or semi-solid composition is required is obtained by the addition of chlorinated diphenyl oxide containing more than 56 per cent of chlorine to insulators such as halogenated hydrocarbons which tend to congeal at low temperatures. The chlorinated di-phenyl oxide acts to depress the congealing point of the mixture, and is present to the extent of at least 10 per cent. An examplary mixture contains 54 per cent of chlorinated di-phenyl (60 per cent chlorine), 36 per cent trichlor benzene and 10 per cent solid chlorinated diphenyl oxide. The di-phenyl oxide is chlorinated at a temperature of 100 to 200 DEG C. with the aid of a catalyst of iron, aluminium or their chlorides, and sufficient chlorine is combined to form the hexachlor compound. From this product a crystalline product separates out which contains more than 56 per cent of chlorine, e.g. from 60 to 61.5 per cent. This product is purified by crystallization, a distillation, and acid may be removed by weak alkali; and impurities absorbed by dry fuller's earth. For crystallization, tri-chlorbenzene may be used as a solvent. U.S.A. Specification 2,041,052 is referred to, as is also British Specification 12107/43 as open to inspection under Sect. 91.
