Abstract
A product of molecular weight exceeding 500 obtainable from the alkylation of an aromatic hydrocarbon is purified by treatment at normal or higher temperature with an adsorbent, for example a bleaching earth, a silica gel or an aluminium oxide. Solvents may be employed, e.g. hydrocarbon fractions of boiling point within the range 50 DEG to 120 DEG C. In an example a fraction of viscosity 1200 centistokes at 50 DEG C. and molecular weight above 500 of the residue resulting from the alkylation of benzene or naphthalene with olefines or chlorinated paraffins in the presence of anhydrous aluminium chloride, e.g. as described in Specification 473,334, after separation by distillation of the products with 12 to 18 carbon atoms in the side chains, is heated with a bleaching earth. The products are cable insulating oils (see Group VIII).
