Abstract

An arc-quenching and insulating liquid consists essentially of a solution of at least one silicone oil and a fluorinated or fluorinated and chlorinated hydrocarbon, the latter amounting to 10 to 50 per cent by weight of the solution. The solutions may also contain from 0.5 to 10 per cent by weight of organic nitrogen compounds such as an aliphatic or aromatic amine or nitrile or a heterocyclic nitrogen compound, e.g. pyridine. In examples, the arc-quenching liquids are composed of (1) polysiloxane oil, hexafluorodichlorobutane and pyridine; (2) dimethylsilicone oil, fluorine oil (i.e. polymerized perfluorinated ethylene), and hexhydrodimethylaniline; and (3) dimethylsilicone oil, fluorine oil and diphenylamine.
