[Class 94 (i)] [Also in Group IX] Apparatus for applying a tubular cover to an annular package particularly of yarn or thread comprises a main support 1, Fig. 1, an annular package supporting member 7 thereon, holding members 9 projecting generally concentrically beyond an inner portion of the member 7 a sleeve 11 into which the member 7 can pass and adapted to be covered by a portion of the cover, the members 7, 11 being mounted to permit axial relative motion therebetween from a position in which the member 7 is near the open end of the sleeve 11 to a position where it is well within the latter. The plate 7 formed with radially extending slots 8 is rotatably mounted on the upper end of the standard 1 above a scroll plate 5 having outwardly extending spiral slots 6 and which is rigidly attached at 4 to the standard 1. A number of L-shaped package gripping-members 9 are mounted on the plate 7 and have depending portions 10 passing through the slots in the plates 7, 5. The sleeve 11 is axially and rotatably movable on the standard 1 and in its lowest position is supported on a stop 13 of rubber or like material. The sleeve is retained in its raised position by a pin 14 pressed into recess 15. The plate 7 is provided with depending guides 22 extending through holes 23 in the sleeve 11, and manipulating members 17, having inverted U-shaped upper ends 20, for supporting the protective cover are carried by the sleeve and are movable in radial slots 18 in brackets 19 attached to the sleeve 11. In operation, a tubular fabric cover as described in U.S.A. Patent Specification 2,230,067 is drawn over the members 9, 11 when in the lowered position, an annular yarn package 16, Fig. 4, is then placed on the plate 7 and the members 7, 11 rotated relatively to the scroll plate 5 to grip the package by the members 9. The sleeve 11 is then raised to apply the cover 25 to the outside of the package and simultaneously the members 17 are raised to lift the other end portion 26 of the cover which is then folded down over the sleeve 11. On lowering the sleeve this part of the cover is applied to the package and overlaps that already in position.
