Abstract

Apparatus for coiling yarn into a package, comprises a rotatable member with an axial core tube, a disc for supporting the package rotatable with the member and able to move relatively to the core tube as the package is being built, a fabric sleeve arranged around the core-tube with one end inserted in the tube and its other end extending over, and around the periphery of, the disc; as the package is built, the disc is forced downwardly by the weight of the growing package thereby withdrawing the sleeve from the tube so as to form an inner lining for the package, and when the build is completed, the ends of the sleeve are folded over the bottom and top of the package. A disc (19, Fig. 1A not shown) rotated through a pulley (14) supports at its centre a core-tube (24), and, at its circumference two upstanding tubes (20). On these three tubes can slide a second disc (30) supported by cords (35) each passing over a pulley and carrying a spring-controlled counterweight in one of the tubes (20). The disc (30) is connected to but separated from a felt disc (34) which can also slide on the core tube. To the upper end of the tubes (20) is fixed a plate with a central aperture fitted with a vertical annular flange (43, Fig. 1, not shown). Within the flange a fixed member (53) formed of two parallel plates one above the other each in the form of part of an annulus formed helically, a gap being thus formed between the two ends of the member into which project fingers (57) from the lower plate. Yarn to be packaged is withdrawn from a supply cop (71) by driven rollers so that it passes to a tube into which (at 91) an aircurrent is disected to carry the yarn into a rotating tube (86). This tube has a bent-out tip so that yarn is deposited in coils on the fingers. At the start of an operation, the disc (30) and the felt disc (34) above it are disposed inside the annular flange (43), and a fabric sleeve is arranged so that most of it hangs within the core tube, with its upper free end turned over the outer surface of the tube and over the top and periphery of the felt disc to rest in folds between this disc and the disc (30). Yarn is deposited on the fingers in a layer of coils which is carried away by the rotating felt disc and compacted by the member (53), the compacting being assisted by air introduced between the component plates thereof and escaping by holes in the lower one. As the package is formed in layers, the felt disc is forced down against the effect of the counterweights, fabric being drawn out of the coretube. When the package is completed, a cardboard or stiffener is placed on top of it and the fabric remaining inside the core tube is folded over the stiffener and the top parts of the outer side of the package, while the fabric between the two discs is folded over the lower side, the two ends being dipped together (Fig. 5, not shown). The supply cop, the feeding and driving parts and the rotary tube 86 are carried on a bracket, the position of which at starting and stopping can be adjusted by a rack and pinion (51, 52, Fig. 1 not shown). A stop-motion feeler sensitive to irregularities on the fed yarn (82, 83, 84) and a static eliminator (97) near the coiling point are provided. The member (53) may be heated to shrink the yarn e.g. by a heating element or by passing hot air or steam into it.
