A yarn package is built up by laying a series of overlapping coils of the yarn in an annular path around a central core on a base plate to form a continuous, helically advancing layer of coiled yarn which is packed between the base plate and a relatively axially movable cover plate, against suitable biasing means. The yarn is laid in substantially tensionless state and is therefore in a particularly suitable form for dyeing which may be effected as the yarn is being laid or after the package is completed. Yarn 104 is laid by means of a rotating distributor or nozzle 92 in a slowly rotating container comprising walls 29, 30, a central core tube 43 and extension thereof 49, and a bottom member 44 attached to the core tube 43. The container rotates with a central spindle 19, while the core tubes 43, 49 and bottom member44 are, in addition, slidable thereon and are loaded by counterweights 115 so that at the commencement of the yarn laying process the bottom member 44 is in a raised position adjacent a helically shaped cover plate 95. The yarn is fed to the nozzle 92 by feed rollers and by an air current supplied through tube 120 and is inserted in coil form in a gap between the leading edge of the plate 95 and trailing fingers thereof. Pins 100 serve to retain the initially-laid yarn in coil form. As the yarnlaying proceeds the package together with the core and bottom members are pressed downwardly until the bottom member 44 rests against a rotating support disc 26. At this stage yarn feed and rotation of the package are arrested. The cover plate 95 and yarn-laying head may be raised and rotated away from the package, the bracket 55 on which these items are supported being suitably mounted for this purpose on a central post 12, and a presser shoe 110 brought into position to compress the package into the height of the single wall member 29. A cover plate having a spring clip retainer is fitted during this step and the completed package may then be removed, comprising core member 43, bottom 44, outer wall 29 and the cover plate (Fig. 8 not shown). Since the core member 43 and outer wall 29 are perforated the package is in a suitable form for subsequent dyeing processes. Alternatively dye may be applied to the yarn or at least to the surface of the layer of coiled yarn as it is being laid by means of a dye applicator 130 mounted on the cover plate 95 (Fig. 4 and 10 not shown). The dye applicator comprises two compartments to which dye may be supplied by suitable supply pipes and from which it may be dispensed through perforations in the cover plate 95. The rate of supply and choice of colours for the compartments may be varied as desired.
