Abstract

565,439. Ingot moulds. FERRO ENGINEERING CO. July 21, 1943, No. 11875. Convention date, July 30, 1942. [Class 83 (i)] An upwardly-tapered hot top 11, lined with refractory material 15, has, in the inner face of said lining, a wedge-shaped cavity 22 with its big end up. This cavity may finish short of the top of a lower refractory block 16, Fig. 6, or extend through the top thereof, Fig. 1, or into an upper block 32, Fig. 5. There may be two opposed cavities to produce, on the sinkhead, vertical faces for engagement by the bits of a handling crane. The cavities 22 may, however, be filled with slurry s and one or more furrows 26 be formed therein with a blunt tool or a finger of the operator. When the hot top is stripped from the ingot, the baked slurry will give way beneath the beads 38, Fig. 6, thus formed on the sinkhead and the faces 24 are not damaged. If the faces 24 are inclined upwardly and outwardly, as shown in Fig. 6, the inclination must be so slight that contraction of the sinkhead 39 on cooling will move the bead 38 inwardly beyond the vertical plane 40 through the bottom edge of the wedgeshaped cavity 22.
