[Class 38 (v)] [Also in Group III] An improved head for a fractionating column comprises a condensate " take-off " device consisting of a closed bucket h having oppositely disposed inlet h<1> and outlet h<2> and a depending counterweight k, the bucket and weight being tilted at predetermined intervals on a horizontal axis i so as to discharge the condensate accumulated therein through an outlet n. The head comprises a lower part a which fits in the top of the column, a main limb c surrounded by a vacuum jacket c<1>, inclined tubing c<2>, a tube b<1> leading to the usual condenser and a cooler b surrounded by a cooling jacket e through which water &c. is circulated. A small cone or septum f is arranged so that the condensate flows in a film down the inside wall of the cooler and does not block the tube. Overflow from the bucket is returned as reflux through tube j. Apparatus for automatically tilting the bucket intermittently comprises an electromagnet l energized by a timing mechanism comprising a disc d rotated by a motor and provided with circumferentially arranged apertures in which pegs d<2> are set according to the interval required, the pegs tripping a switch r by which a relay is energized and thus the solenoid 1.
