In a liquid cooler for milk churns of the type described in the parent Specification, the evaporator is in direct thermal contact with the water in the working chamber, instead of in the buffer chamber. As shown in Fig. 1, the evaporator 5 is positioned in the working chamber 1 between a wall 3 and a screen 6 having a lower aperture 7 so that water is forced to flow upwardly over the evaporator before flowing over the wall 3 and into the buffer chamber 2. A plate evaporator may be employed in which case the screen 6 may be replaced by the evaporator (Fig. 2, not shown), or the evaporator may replace the wall 3, the screen 6 being omitted in this latter case (Fig. 3, not shown]. As shown in Fig. 6, a float device 14 having an abutment 17 is positioned in the buffer chamber so that when the water level therein rises, due to overflow from the working chamber when a large number of churns are placed therein, the abutment 17 operates a switch 18 which starts the circulation pump (not shown) and the compressor motor. In further embodiments a pneumatic level-sensing device is provided in the buffer chamber, upper and lower sets of distribution nozzles for recirculated water are positioned in the working chamber and have slidable supports for the churns associated therewith, and the contacts of the thermostats which normally control the pump and compressor are heated, either by electrical resistors or by the refrigerant condenser.
