Abstract
<PICT:0862274/III/1> <PICT:0862274/III/2> A process for controlling the quantity of reflux per unit quantity of condensate removed from a process as a product comprises collecting directly into an annular chamber all the condensate as it is formed in a condenser during rectification, the annular chamber having a series of apertures in the base of the chamber to divide the condensate into a predetermined number of downwardly flowing small jets, coalescing the jets into two separate liquid streams and conveying the two streams separately as rectifier reflux and as product respectively. In a preferred apparatus for carrying out the process all the condensate is collected in an annular chamber 1 which is in the form of a trough and is provided with a series of nozzles 2. Below the chamber 1 is a channel 3 fitted with a partition 4 which divides the channel into 2 sections each of which is provided with a discharge pipe, one of which (5) is bent and extends radially towards the axis of the column and is rotatably mounted in a second discharge pipe 6 for conveyance of the product. By this means channel 3 is oscillatably mounted beneath the trough 1. The other section of channel 3 is connected to a discharge pipe 7 to carry the reflux towards the centre of the column. A permanent magnet or an electromagnet 8 is fixed to a flange 9 and a piece of soft iron 10 is fixed to the channel 3 which can be so adjusted that its partition 4 is situated between two nozzles 2, by which means the condensates can be divided into any given proportions.
