Abstract

1,082,211. Reflux heads for fractionating columns. Q.V.F. Ltd., and K. T. POOLE. Dec. 17, 1964 [Jan. 17, 1964], No. 2228/64. Heading B1B. In a reflux head for a fractionating column wherein the vapour rises from chamber 1 through aperture 4 into vapour/liquid separator 2 and then flows to the condenser, chamber 1 is provided with movable funnel 7 which in one position conveys the refluxed condensate from conduit 5 back into chamber 1 and in another position conveys the condensate into conduit 6 so bypassing chamber 1, the driving mechanism for the funnel being arranged in outwardly extending tubular elements 21 through which the funnel may be withdrawn for repairs and replacemet. The funnel is carried by an arm 15 which has its ends in slipping blocks 14 and 17. On energising a solenoid 20 a rod 18 carrying the block 17 moves inwardly pushing the arm and so displaces the funnel to the by-pass direction. A spring 10 on a pin 11 which carries the block 14 consequently returns the arm and funnel to the original position. To remove the funnel the end plate 13 of the tubular element carrying the pin and spring is uncoupled from its associated collar 23 and the arm 15 and funnel may be withdrawn as the arm is a loose fit in block 17. Bellows 29 sealed to the slipping blocks and to the gaskets 25 provided between the end plates 13 and the tubular element 21 are provided to allow for movement of the blocks but to segregate the vapour chamber from the bores in the end plates. Another form of reflux head is described in which there is only one tubular element for withdrawing the funnel.
