Abstract
In an extractive distn. (a) the feed is introduced at a middle point and the solvent is introduced at a higher point on the column; (b) the column is maintained under the conditions of extractive distn. and heat input is controlled by varying the temp. at some point on the column between the feed plate and the solvent inlet plate, (c) an upper prod. is extd. which should contain >=1 of the components while the bottom prod. contains the solvent and >=1 of the other components in the feed; (d) the bottom prod. is subsequently fractionated to separate this component from the solvent. The temp. control point is pref. at a vertical spacing of 0.1-0.9D from the solvent injection point, where D is the vertical distance between the solvent and feed injection points. This parameter then used to control either the heat input to the boiler, the solvent temp. or the feed temp. Used for sepg. of mixts. of differing polarity esp. hydrocarbon with different satn. degrees, e.g. aromatics (benzene, toluene), diolefins (butadiene, isoprene), and satd. or mono-olefinic cpds. with close b.pts.
