Abstract

564,294. Slat fabrics. ARTHUR, O. F. April 21, 1943, No. 6425. [Class 45] [Also in Group IX] A fabric or matting for covering soft ground on landing fields, roadways, &c., or to form beach aprons, flooring, &c., comprises a plurality of panels A, B hinged together along their longer edges by spiral wire inserts 17, with or without rods 19, so as to fold on one another in zig - zag formation for storage or transport. The ends of the panels are bounded by metal strips 10 slotted at 12 to receive the crimped-up ends of the strands 8 through which are threaded retainer rods 15. The crossstrands 9, woven under and over the strands 8, are looped at 7 round the outermost strands 8. The strips 10, which may have spiral wire loops joining their contiguous ends, are formed with integral hinge knuckles 11 whereby any number of laid-out lengths of sections A, B can be joined together in situ to cover any required area. In a modification one or both of the sets of strands 8,9 may be spaced further apart to enable strips of wood, bamboo, fibre, rubber, &c. to be woven between the strands after the mat has been laid. The strands may be of wire or rope. The fabric may be used for fencing or as beach or torpedo nets.
