Abstract

<PICT:0564273/IV/1> A roller bearing comprises rollers made of a synthetic plastic material moulded under heat and pressure to the required dimensions, said material having a percentage moisture absorption (in accordance with the method of test described), of not more than 6 per cent, and a diametral deformation (in accordance with the method of test described), of not more than that given by the relationship D = W/65, where D represents the diametral deformation in thousandths of an inch and W is the load in pounds. The material is also preferably isotropic, and the rollers may be given a surface treatment with oil, varnish or a metallizing preparation, for the purpose of excluding moisture. Phenol-aldehyde and aniline-formaldehyde resins are specified as suitable materials. The races and the cages for the rollers may be moulded from a synthetic plastic material. In Fig. 9, the rollers 1 rotate on the shaft 4, being retained laterally and radially in split housings 2, 3. Fig. 13 shows rollers 1 with central flanges 4 to retain the rollers laterally. Fig. 17 shows a construction in which the outer race 3 is made spherical for self-alignment in its seating 4. According to the Provisional Specification, the invention is applicable also to ball bearings.
