966,839. Bearings; lubricating. PHILIPS GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN N.V. June 5, 1963 [June 8, 1962], No. 2342/63. Heading F2A. A thrust bearing comprises a supporting member and a rotating thrust member, one of which members is provided over at least part of its surface with uniformly distributed grooves, the centre line of each of which forms part of a helix such that when the shaft rotates, lubricant is forced by the grooves into the bearing. The lubricant has a consistency such that, when the shaft is stationary, the lubricant forms a solid substance and is accumulated mainly near the entrances of the grooves; and when the shaft is rotating, the lubricant is forced into the bearing and produces a lubricating film between the bearing members. In an embodiment, a shaft 1, carrying a rotor 7, has at each end a spherical thrust member 2 seated in a hemispherical cavity in a supporting member 3 which is carried by a holder 4. Each thrust member 2 is provided over part of its surface with grooves 5, the centre line of each of which forms part of a helix. Lubricating fat 6 is provided near the entrance of the grooves and caps 8 prevent dust &c. from entering the bearing. When the shaft rotates, lubricant is forced into the grooves and is pressurized. In a modification, the thrust members are conical-shaped and the cavity in the supporting member is shaped accordingly. The above bearings resist radial and axial forces, but, if a bearing is required to resist thrust only, the grooves are on the face of the thrust member which is in engagement with a flat surface of the supporting member. As an alternative the grooves may be provided on the supporting member.
