563,831. Strainers. McKEAN, J. G, May 11, 1943, No. 7461. [Class 46] In a strainer for liquids having a cylindrical screen adapted to be cleaned, during the normal straining operation, by reverse flow of liquid through different portions of the screen in succession, the screen 14, Fig. 1, is carried by a cylinder 2 formed with vertical slots 13, and a chamber 18, having an opening corresponding to the slots, is provided in an arm 17 rotatable step-by-step by means of a hand wheel 20 from a cleaning cut-off position, in which the chamber is out of register with all the slots, to positions in which the chamber registers with each slot in succession. Alternatively, a chamber 30, Fig. 5, is formed in the casing 1 and the cylinder 2 is rotated. In the cleaning positions, a port 27 in the chamber 18 registers with an arcuate groove 25, communicating through a passage 28 with a suction pipe, to effect a reverse flow through the chamber. In the cut-off position, the port 27 is closed by the plain portion 26, Fig: 3, between the -ends of the groove 25. The operating spindle 15, Figs. 3 and 5, carries a cam 31 adapted to open a spring-pressed valve 34 for admitting liquid at a pressure higher than that of the liquid being strained to the chamber 30 in the cleaning positions of the cylinder 2, the flat portion 32 of the cam allowing the valve to close in the cut-off position.
