Abstract

563,600. Fusible cut-outs. SOWOOD, R. C., and FERGUSON PAILIN, Ltd. Jan. 12, 1943, No. 588. [Class 38 (i)] A cartridge fuse comprises a number of fuse elements consisting of wires or strips 1 of silvet &c. with reinforcing endpieces 1a, 1b of copper &c. attached to end plates 5 by passing the end-pieces through concentric rows of holes in the end plates, bending them over and soldering or brazing them to the end-plates, the whole being mounted in a barrel 7 which may be filled with sand &c. or may be solid with tunnels one for each fuse element. Within the end plates 5 are spacers 2 which may consist of a metal plate apertured to correspond with the end-plate and stepped annularly to provide a support for the elements. Alternatively, for heavier currents, the spacers may consist of thick plates of porcelain or other refractory insulation. The end plates carry terminal tags 6 that pass through caps 10 by which the endplates are secured against the end of the barrel 7 with an asbestos washer 8 between, the cap being secured by spinning over the edge 10b into the groove 7a. Refractory cement is used to seal the apertures in the end-plate and also to seal the cap to the barrel, the surfaces of the contacting parts of the barrel and flange being grooved. Instead of a simple tag 6 butted and brazed on to the end-plate, a bifurcated tag may be furnished. Resistance wires in parallel with the fuse elements may be included to vary the characteristics.
