563,091. Photo-electrically controlled glass - treating machines. UNITED GLASS BOTTLE MANUFACTURERS, Ltd., SEDDON, E., and MOORSHEAD, T. C. Jan. 25, 1943, No. 1218. [Class 56] [Also in Group XL] Relates to apparatus for introducing into glass bottles and like containers glass treating materials, such as described in Specifications 531,145 and 556,602. According to the invention, normally inoperative photo-electric means are provided to prevent the delivery of the materials when a bottle is not in the receiving position. In the apparatus shown, the bottles P coming from a glass-forming machine are carried by a belt E with spacing fingers F and pass underneath a shoot A containing the treating materials in tablet form. A disc B with openings C rotates below the shoot A in timed relationship with the belt to extract a tablet from the bottom of the shoot and drop it into the bottle which reaches the correct position under the shoot. According to the invention a lamp K is provided on one side and a photoelectric cell H on the other side ; and the cell is connected to an amplifier G controlling a solenoid M, the core of which is connected bv linkwork I to a shutter J at the bottom of the shoot. The amplifier G is switched off by mechanism L, N controlled by the spacing fingers F of the belt, except when a bottle is due to arrive underneath the shoot ; and when a bottle arrives under the shoot, itobstructs the light from the lamp to the cell and the amplifier remains inactive although now switched on. But if a bottle is missing under the shoot when the belt occupies the position when the amplifier is switched on, the light then received by the cell causes the amplifier G to operate the solenoid M, thereby closing the shutter J. Instead of switching the amplifier G off by the mechanism L, N, the light may be cut off by a shutter controlled by the belt. The temperature of the ware in the region where the material is supplied, cooling may be accomplished by lengthening the conveyer belt, or heating may be effected by heating elements around or in the conveyer base.
