[Classes 39 (i) and 40 (v)] An amplifier for a receiver of radio signals, .particularly those of the order of 300 or more megacycles, and consisting of pulses, the duration of each pulse being short in comparison with the interval between pulses, consists of a beam deflection valve arranged so that the beam current is switched on intermittently for periods of a fraction of a second at a time; when flowing, the current exceeds the maximum electron current which could be drawn from the cathode continuously without early breakdown. The beam current may be switched on by controlling the anode voltage by means of a square wave generator. The valve may also serve as a rectifier or mixer.
