Abstract
562,925. Fuel pumps. STEVENS, A. H. (Thompson Products, Inc.). Feb. 10, 1943, No. 2227. [Class 110 (i)] A fuel pump for aircraft &c. is mounted in a tank 11 formed between the upper and lower skins 14, 15 of the aeroplane, the support comprising a bracket 111 ... 113 fixed to the wall 13 and to an inset portion 110 of the skin 15. The motor 10 is in a liquid-tight casing connected to the pump casing 25 by a channel through which passes the lead 58 to the motor and which forms an inlet for cooling air drawn in to the motor casing by suction produced in a pipe 108 projecting into the slip stream from the space 69 between the motor or pump casings. The shaft 63 connecting motor and pump is sealed against leakage by a flexible ring 81 pressed between a fixed annulus 79 seated on a shoulder 68 and a screwed sleeve 82. In addition, a graphitic carbon ring 85 rotating with the shaft has sliding contact with 79, and is packed by a resilient washer 86 pressed against it by a spring 92 abutting on a cup 87 housing the washer. A flame barrier between the motor and pump comprises a sleeve 72, 74 loosely surrounding the shaft and a second sleeve 77 spaced from 74 and having a portion 76 gripping the shaft so as to rotate therewith. The shaft 63 is keyed to the impeller 91 by curved keys 98 engaging curved slots 96, 100 in the impeller and shaft respectively. The pump casing, has a cap 34, by removing which the impeller may be removed from the shaft. The inner parts 126 of the impeller blades 127 agitate..the entering fuel and separate bubbles of gas which pass up through the fuel in the tank and escape by the vent 21<1>. The fuel is delivered by pipes 28, 29.
