Abstract

562,595. Grabs. PRIESTMAN BROS., Ltd., and CQOK, A. Dec. 24, 1942, No. 18312. [Class 78 (iv)] In a single rope grab of the kind described in Specification 200,410, [Class 78 (iv)], in which the hoisting rope is wound round a drum, the rotation of which causes the jaws to close, the locking lever which engages the notches in the rope drum, is made as a pawl acting in compression during engagement and is provided with a projection which engages the tail piece of the tumbler to hold the tumbler raised as long as the pawl is in engagement with the notches of the drum. The Figure shows a construction in which the grab is suspended by its hook c from a ring a, the load being taken by a pin p. At this time the tumbler s is raised and the locking pawl t is free to engage with the drum e and the girder m is lowered to open the jaws of the grab when the rope is paid out. When the rope is drawn up the pawl t engages on the drum e and frees the hook c. The tumbler s is meanwhile held up by the arm u of the pawl engaging the tail piece x until the grab is lowered to the load. The fall of the tumbler s on the release of the pawl t lifts the latter and re-erects the hook c so that the grab closes, lifting a load when the rope is drawn up.
