Abstract

158,338. Macnamara, C. M., and Reid, W. Oct. 31, 1919. Tip-buckets.-A tip-bucket is dumped by the engagement of a false bail with a pivoted hooked member mounted on the end of the crane jib. The latches 1, which engage depressions in the rim of the bucket, are pivoted to the bail B and connected to the false bail 3 so that they are released to allow the bucket to tip by gravity when the false bail is raised. The pivoted member 7, which is U-shaped in cross-section, normally hangs clear of the hoisting-rope, as shown, under the action of a counterweight 9. Various means, as hereinafter described, may be used to swing the member 7 towards the rope when the bucket is approaching the desired elevation, so that the member 4 is guided between the arms of the member 7. As the hoisting continues, the bail B is moved outwards in passing the cam-shaped surfaces of the hooks 8 which also guide the bail into a predetermined plane for tipping. On passing above the hooks the bail moves into line with the hoisting rope again and thus brings the false bail directly over the hooks. On lowering, the false bail is engaged and raised by the hooks to dump the bucket. On raising the bucket again and allowing the member 7 to swing back to the illustrated position, the hooks are disengaged and the bucket can be lowered for a second operation. The member 7 may be actuated entirely by gravity by manipulating the jib, or the movement of the latter may be used to apply a tension to a cord 10 suitably anchored on the crane structure. The cord can be actuated also by hand or by being connected to the winding drum or to a fixed point on the hoisting rope. When it is desired to vary the plane of the member 7 relatively to the plane of the jib, the member 7 is pivoted on a bracket which in turn is suspended from the jib. Thebuckets used are preferably of the self-righting type, and may be arranged to tip on one side only.
