Abstract

562,541. Automatic smallarms. STOCKS, H. B. Aug. 23, 1942, No. 7074. [Class 119] The cartridge magazine 3 of a sub-machine gun is inserted in the butt and extends at a slight downwards slope from a position in rear of and below the breech 30 to the rear end of the butt. The cartridges 15c are disposed in the magazine with their axes approximately at right angles to the barrel axis and are fed forwards by a spring and follower. Transfer of the leading cartridge to the loading position shown is effected by a pair of gripper arms 40 pivoted at 37, the spring jaws 41 of which can enter the mouth of the magazine and grip the foremost cartridge. The arms 40 are carried by a member 38 comprising a slot 39 which is engaged by a roller 32a supported between the front ends of a pair of crossconnected slides 31 which are connected to the breech block 35 so as to be reciprocated thereby. Latching means are provided, engageable with notches 50, 52 in the member 38, to detain the arms 40 for the necessary periods in the raised and lowered positions respectively. The front end of the breech block is slotted to pass over the jaws 41 and provide a central projection by which the lifted cartridge is pushed forwardly into the breech. The butt-plate is hinged and has inwardly-extending hooks which engage lateral studs on the magazine and start the withdrawal thereof when the butt-plate is opened.
