Abstract
561,350. Differential gearing. THORNTON TANDEM CO. Nov. 11, 1942, No. 15956. Convention date, Nov. 4, 1941. [Class 80 (ii)] A differential comprises a driving spider 14 having on each side clutch teeth 20 engageable with clutch teeth 23 on members 22 splined to the ends of the driven shafts 12. Members 22 also have camming teeth 24 engaging teeth 21 on a member 17 located within the spider 14 by an annular rib 16. The members 22 are urged together by a spring 32 carried by a telescopic cage 30 having flanges 31a engaging the members 22. Circumferential play exists between the teeth 20, 23, so that when one axle 12 tends to overrun the other, the teeth 21, 24, cam on one another and the corresponding teeth 20, 23, are disengaged from one another.
