Abstract

560,934. Making tyre covers. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., HICKIN, K. J., and HOLYOAK, W. Sept. 22, 1942, No. 13316. [Class 144 (i)] Long cylindrical plies 50 of tyre casings to be manipulated on to a former 10 have their free ends supported by one or more rings 18, 27 or like narrow members of approximately the same diameter as the drum and rotating with it. The ring 18 may be carried on a disc riveted to the flange of a sleeve welded to a hollow spindle 22 supported in an arm 25 adapted to swivel on a post 26, and the disc of ring 27 may be carried by a boss 29 secured in the end of the tubular spindle. A movable shaft 30 having key driving connection to the tubular spindle is adapted to be coupled by a bayonet joint 36 with a nut 17 securing the parts of the former to its shaft 14, so as to be driven thereby. The rings may alternatively be supported directly from the drum. Local pressure is applied by a smooth stick, to the edge of the ply on the former to cause the ply to pass gradually on to the former.
