560,480. Aircraft control surfaces. BLACKBURN AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and PETTY, G. E. Nov. 11, 1942, No. 15929. [Class 4] Control surfaces for aircraft have the nose portion of the skin made of heavy gauge material, particularly metal, and secured to continuous ribs, the construction being such that the nose portion of the skin substantially balances the mass rearwardly of the pivotal axis of the surface and is strong enough to transmit torsional and other loads. In the aileron shown, the nose portion 1 of the skin, of heavy gauge material, is secured to a number of ribs 4 which extend rearwardly from the edges of the portion 1 and have depressions 5 to receive those edges. Ledges 2 are provided for the edges of the rear part 3 of the skin. The end rib 4<1> nests in the curvature of the portion 1 and there is preferably at least one other rib 4<2> of similar shape adjacent each end, which supports the end of the pivot housing 6. Rudders and elevators are also mentioned.
