Abstract

897,794. Hinge movement balancing of aircraft control surfaces. BLACKBURN AIRCRAFT Ltd. March 23, 1961 [April 11, 1960], No. 12882/60. Class 4. An aircraft control surface such as an aileron A has a balance plate or nose C located within fixed aerofoil structure such as a wing W, the plate C being hinged to the front of the control surface at D and having each of its ends connected to a lever E which is slotted to go round the control surface pivots B, and connected by a pivot F beyond the slot to a link G hinged at H to fixed structure, so that the balance plate C is rocked and moved bodily consequent on angular displacement of the control surface. By this means, the balance plate remains within the confines of the aerofoil structure, while permitting large angular movement of the control surface, In the embodiment described, the plate C lies in a cavity in the wing W, and is subjected to a pressure differential by means of gaps J between the control surface and wing. The plate C may be sealed round its four edges by loose fabric or by flexible tubing, or may have very small working clearances.
