Abstract
560,322. Tipplers and spreaders. STRACHAN & HENSHAW, Ltd., and GROSSMITH, G. W. Aug. 20, 1942, No. 11734. [Class 78 (iv)] Loose material is handled in bulk by a gantry structure 10 movable along a railway and fitted with two track ramps whereby wagons 37 can be run up on to rails on the gantry platform 12. A wagon tippler 31 may be located within the structure to discharge the contents at the side of the railway, the operation being by a winch 33 and cable 34. Top stops 35 connected to counterweights 36 take the weight of the inverted wagon. The top posts of the structure support a horizontal girder 11 along which can run a support 13 for a beam 14 counterweighted at 23 and upheld at its outer end by a trestle 24. The connections 11a and 24a of the beam 14 to the support 13 and trestle 24 respectively are of a universal type, that at 11a permitting swinging of the beam 14 in one direction into parallelism with the railway track, the top posts being staggered relatively to the girder 11 to allow of this. The trestle 24 may have ground-engaging feet 25 or may rest on wheels running on a single track. A telpher 20 riding on the beam 14 may have its grab 21 controlled from a cabin 22 located on the telpher or on the inner end 23 of the beam. The telpher may travel beyond the trestle 24, and, when the grab-operating cabin is on the beam end, may support an observation cabin. The telpher is brought to the end 23 when it is desired to raise the trestle 24 off the ground, either for re-alignment or for bringing the beam parallel to the railway for transport. A simpler construction is described in which the tippler is omitted. Specification 558,181 is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
