Abstract

746,528. Guided platform lifts. VILLARS, J. Jan. 13, 1954 [Jan. 17, 1953], No. 1044/54. Class 78 (3). A load engaging member 20 is raised and lowered by a suspended motor-driven screw 6 along a column 3 comprising a pair of H-section girders arranged with their webs parallel and their adjacent flange edges welded to each other; the member 20 being attached to a cylindrical nut 11 by a saddle 12 which is disengaged from the nut should the member 20 meet an obstruction during lowering. The device is stated to be suitable for mounting on a transportable carriage for use in loading boxes on to a lorry, but is described as a garage lift in which the member 20 comprises a pair of arms adapted to support a vehicle directly or by means of a pair of detachable wheel tracks or a detachable vehicle body supporting crutch which may be X- or Y-shaped in plan. The member 20 is rigidly secured to a wheeled carriage 15 guided on the column and secured to the saddle 12 by means of plates 14 which extend through a vertical slot in the column. In a modification (Fig. 6, not shown) the member 20 is hinged to the carriage 15 to enable it to be moved into a vertical stowed position.. In another modification (Fig. 5, not shown) the column is rotatable about a vertical axis and is provided with a catch device to retain it in its adjusted position. In a further modification (not shown) the carriage 15 supports a pair of platforms.
