Abstract

886,226. Masted lift trucks; loading vehicles on to carrier vehicles. VEREINIGTE WESTDEUTSCHE WAGGONFABRIKEN A.G. Feb. 13, 1958 [March 2, 1957], No. 4798/58. Classes 78 (3) and 78 (4). A lift truck comprising a mast 7 which is movable lengthwise of the truck in guides 5 and on which a load-supporting carriage 11 provided with a fork, clamp or jib is vertically movable, is characterized in that substantially vertical support legs 30, which are adjustable in height, are provided on the load supporting carriage 11 and are guided for horizontal displacement on the carriage. As shown, the carriage 11 carries a pair of load-supporting forks which are provided with vertical side plates 13 and which are adjustable towards and away from each other, the forks also being provided with guides 21 for carriages 22 which support hydraulically extensible legs 30 and which are movable along the guides 21 by means of hydraulic rams 24. In order to lift a container 27 from a vehicle 28, the mast 7 is brought to the forward end of the truck to the position shown in Fig. 1 and the forks are engaged with the container. The carriage 11 is raised and simultaneously the legs 30 are extended, the rams 24 then being extended to move the mast 7 rearwardly to bring the centre of gravity of the load to a position over hydraulically actuated support legs 19 on the truck frame. On retracting the legs 30 the container may then be lowered on to the truck frame. The truck is loaded on to a rail vehicle 28 by placing the legs 30 on the far side of the vehicle and by lowering the carriage 11 on the mast 7 to raise the wheels 35 from the ground. The rams 24 are then retracted to pull the truck through the position shown in Fig. 4 to a position in which the wheels 35 are lowered on to a turntable 32. The single driving wheel 17 is then turned through 90 degrees and driven up an arcuate ramp 33 on to the vehicle 28. In a modification (not shown), the mast 7 and guide tracks 5 are mounted on an auxiliary frame which is pivoted about a vertical axis on the truck frame.
