Abstract

560,092. Cathode-ray tubes. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. July 21, 1942, No. 10173. Convention date, Jan. 25, 1941. [Class 39 (i)] The fluorescent screen in colour television is formed by " printing " alternate strips of differing luminescent material on to the screen which has been coated previously with a binder. A number of plates 1, Fig. 1a, of glass, mica, plastic &c. are set on edge in a stack 3 and luminescent material 5 is applied to the edges ; a second similar stack 9 and, if desired, a third 15 is made up each with differing material according to the colours required. The stacks are then split up and a composite stack is built up with plates 3, 9, 15, Fig. 2, alternating, the different luminescent materials 5, 11, 17 being in sequence ; this composite stack is used to print the material on to the screen. The binder may be dilute alkali silicates or borates, nitrocellulose and alcohol or amyl acetate. Blue luminescence may be obtained by use of silver activated zinc sulphide, zinc silicate and zirconium silicate; green by use of alphawillemite with silver; for red chromium activated aluminium beryllicate or zinc cadmium sulphide with silver. For yellow in a two-colour screen may be used silver activated zinc cadmium sulphide, manganese activated beta-willemite or zinc beryllium silicate. The screen may be excited by ultra-violet or X-rays. Specification 255,057, [Class 39 (i)], is referred to.
