Abstract

559,888. Electric welding. COMBRIDGE, G. A July 27, 1942, No. 10494. [Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Group XII] A welding electrode holder comprises a tubular handle 1, an inner conducting tube 2 spaced by radiating fins 2a from the handle, and a core 3 having an opening 12 to receive the welding rod. A fireclay sleeve 5 in a metal casing 6 protects the tool from excessive heat. The welding rod extends through an aperture 10 in a separate annulus 2b of copper alloy brazed to the tube 2, and through the sleeve 5 and casing 6. A second set of apertures may be provided at right angles to receive a rod of different diameter. The apertures are elongated so that when the core is moved axially to engage the welding rod the rod is gripped by the tapered sides of the opening. The core is pressed forward by a spring 15 and is retracted by a finger-pressed plunger 17 having a cam face 23, to release the welding rod. A shield for the operator, which is flexible to any desired contour comprises a number of sectors 35 of a fibrous or rubber composition connected by metal rings 36 and by a coil spring 37 in such a manner that some play is permitted. The rings 36 may be bent to any desired form. The spring 37 is enclosed by asbestos sheathing 39, which slides over the handle 1.
