Abstract

559,648. Hydraulic accumulators. VICKERSARMSTRONGS, Ltd., and WARDLE, J. July 22, 1942, No. 10261. [Class 69 (ii)] Relates to a hydraulic accumulator system in which a continuously-running pump 6 supplies an accumulator 1 through valves 9, 15 and a pressure line 16 and the piston 17 of the accumulator, which operates against a gaseous loading medium in the space above it, is adapted at the end of its upward travel to actuate the differential piston 2a of a servomotor so that fluid pressure then operates the valve 9 to the right so as to byepass the liquid from the upper (discharge) side of the pump 6 and return it to the lower (suction) side. According to the invention, the larger diameter of the piston 2a is disposed uppermost and the upper end of the cylinder 3 is connected either with the pump pressure through a connection 14 or with the gaseous loading medium through a passage passing through the centre of the piston 2a Figs 6, 7 (not shown). In the position shown, a circumferential groove 4 in the piston 2a connects the suction side of the pump 6 to the cylinder 8 of the valve 9. When the piston 2a is raised, the line 18 leading to the cylinder 8 is put into connection with the pressure side of the pump through the connection 14 and a passage through the piston 2a so that the valve 9 is moved to the right and the pump operates idly. The original condition is restored when the piston 17 descends. In other modifications a separate connection leads from the pressure line 16 to the side of the cylinder 3 and thence to a groove in the side of the piston 2a which, in the upper position of the piston, connects with the line 18.
