Abstract

559,498. Making fastenings &c. SUMMERS, J. M. Sept. 14, 1942, No. 12953. Convention date, May 22. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Stamping; forging; trimming.-Articles having a sheath of hard wear-resisting material and a body of soft metal such as aluminium and aluminium alloys are shaped by a combined forging and stamping process in which the soft metal during forging acts as a fluid medium to shape the hard metal shell. As applied to the production of a bayonet slot type of fastener such as is described in Specifications 538,115 and 557,828, [Group XXV], a stainless steel cap 14, Fig. 1, is placed in a die 28 and a slug 15 of aluminium &c. to form the body is superposed. Pressure applied by the top die 29 stamps the bottom of the shell to position the ram presses 11, 12 and the abutments 13, Fig. 6, also the parts 11A, 12A and 13A, Fig. 1 respectively. Bevels are also formed at 17A and 17B and a flange 19 is formed at 19A and indented at 19B. In further dies the flange is thinned with the formation of an annular rib 20, Fig. 6 ; the flange is trimmed peripherally; and a hole to pass the stud member and cross pin of the fastening is provided. Metal may also be caused to fill anchoring holes 24 in the shell.
