Abstract

558.983. Coating metals. MAGNESIUM METAL CORPORATION, Ltd., and COATES, G. E. April 3, 1942. Nos. 4497/42 and 6718/43. Drawings to Specification. [Classes 82 (i) and 82 (ii)] In a process for the protective surface treatment of magnesium base alloys, the latter are treated with solutions having a dichromate concentration exceeding 0.05 mols. per litre, a sulphate concentration exceeding 0.2 mols. per litre and a hydrogen ion concentration controlled by a buffer agent or agents with the pH range 4-6 as measured by a glass electrode, the constituent salts of the bath being so selected that within the pH range their cations remain in stable solution and the upper limits for the dichromate and sulphate concentrations corresponding to saturation point in the particular solutions used and temperature of use. The required dichromate content may be provided by the dichromates singly or mixed of hydrogen, lithium, sodium, magnesium or potassium and the sulphate concentration by the sulphates alone or mixed, of hydrogen, lithium, sodium, magnesium or potassium. An ammonium salt may be used to supply the whole or part of the dichromate or sulphate or both. For cold solutions the buffer agent comprises single or mixed acids or single or mixed salts of the acids and preferably of acetic, propionic, butyric, valeric, malonic, succinnic, glutaric, adipic, penolic or pthalic acid, the cations of the salt being those of lithium, sodium, magnesium, potassium or ammonium, and for hot solutions single or mixed acids or single or mixed salts of these acids such as caproic, oenanthic, malonic, succinnic &c. and the cations of the same elements as before. Alternatively the cations may be chosen from the group consisting of tetra methyl ammonium ions, tetra ethyl ammonium ions and N methyl-pyridinium ions. Specifications 287,450, 305,197, 331,853, [all in Class 82(ii)]. 353,415, 450,589, 482,689, 506,836, 510,353, 510,487; 550,175 and 550,176, [both in Group XXXVI], are referred to.
