Abstract
558,555. Cyclic hydrocarbons. STANDARD OIL DEVELOPMENT CO. Nov. 12, 1941, No. 14552. Convention date, Dec. 12, 1940. [Class 2 (iii)] Cyclohexane, benzene, and their alkyl derivatives are prepared by subjecting an aliphatic mono-olefin of 3 to 4 carbon atoms to the action of a volatile halide of the Friedel-Craft type (AlCl 3 , BF 3 , or HgCl 2 ) and a substantially non-volatile solid catalyst, comprising molybdenum sulphide and copper, at 20-350‹ C. In an example substantially anhydrous propylene is condensed to benzene and other hydrocarbons using boron fluoride and a molybdenum sulphide-copper mixture as catalyst. Other materials which may be added to the reaction mixture are acetylene, and carbonyls of chromium, molybdenum or nickel. Condensation reactions are avoided by rapid removal of the aromatics as formed followed by rapid hydrolysis of the halide catalyst. The Specification, as open to inspection under Sect. 91, includes the use, along with the volatile halide, of metal such as nickel or compounds of Mo, W, Al, V, U, Cr, Cu or Ni. Alkylation of the aromatic products by means of the olefin feed stock may be suppressed by the introduction of small amounts of sulphur or sulphur dioxide or other condensation inhibitor. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
