Abstract

Tungsten chromium or molybdenum carbide substantially free from uncombined carbon, is produced by heating of the metal or decomposable compound of the metal in a mixture of a hydrocarbon and hydrogen, sufficient hydrogen being present to prevent decomposition of the hydrocarbons and deposition of carbon. The maximum ratio of hydrocarbon to hydrogen permissible is calculated by assuming that in the case of hydrocarbons other than methane, decomposition and recombination to form methane takes place and by ignoring the additional hydrogen required for such conversion. The maximum percentage of methane permissible at 800 DEG C. is ca. 8 per cent. Carbides specified are W2C, WC, Cr3C2 and Mo2C. The carbides are reckoned to be pure if the analysis shows less than 0.05 per cent. carbon. Elements other than carbon may be present. Metal compounds which may be used as WO3, MoO3, Cr2O3; H2WO4, H2MO4, H2CrO4; Am2WO4, Am2 CrO4, Am2MO4. Hydrocarbons specified are methane, ethane, propene, propane, butenes, butanes, heptanes and benzene. Hydrocarbons which are gaseous at room temperature are preferred. The temperature preferably exceeds 950 DEG C. The product is preferably rapidly cooled. Alternatively the percentage of hydrocarbon in the gaseous mixture may be increased as the temperature is lowered.
