551,624. Thymol. BUSH, Inc., R. T. Aug. 1, 1941., No. 9859. Convention date, Aug. 2, 1940. [Class 2 (iii)] Thymol is made by interaction of m-cresol or mixtures containing m-cresol and an isopropylating agent (isopropyl halide or di-isopropyl m-cresol in presence of a Friedel Crafts reaction catalyst (Al Cl 3 ) at 20‹ to 0‹C., and in presence of enough inert chlorinated hydrocarbon solvent (ethylene dichloride) to just dissolve the reaction mixture (50-100 grams to each 108 grams total cresol) and yield a mass capable of being stirred. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states that carbon bisulphide may be used as solvent. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
