Hydrocarbons; halogen compounds; phenols; phenol ethers; fatty acid esters.-Condensation reactions of the Friedel-Crafts type are effected by the aid of a boron halide or an addition compound thereof in place of the aluminium chloride and the like usually employed. The reactions mentioned comprise the union of hydrocarbons and their derivatives with organic halogen compounds, the splitting of hydrocarbon oils into lower hydrocarbons, and the addition of hydrogen halides to olefines. When high temperatures are employed, the application of pressure is necessary. Examples are given of the interaction of the following, boron fluoride with or without hydrochloric acid being present :-benzene and ethyl bromide, to give an oil of b.p. 90-200‹ C., toluene and ethylene to form liquid hydrocarbons, ethylene and hydrochloric acid to yield ethyl chloride, naphthalene and ethylene to produce ethylnaphthalene, tetrahydronaphthalene and ethylene to form a hydrocarbon product, cyclohexene and benzene to give cyclohexylbenzene and dicyclohexylbenzene, cresol and ethylene to give a mixture of cresols and cresol ethers which are alkylated in the nucleus, oils from the liquefaction of coal and containing 25 per cent phenols with ethylene to form a non-phenolic product of higher viscosity, and acetic acid with ethylene to produce a mixture of high-molecular fatty acid esters. The following reactions are also referred to :-benzene with ethyl chloride to vield ethylbenzene and toluene with ethylene to form ethyltoluene; in the latter case, other olefines such as propylene and butylene, or cyclohexene may be employed, and naphthalene or tetrahydronaphthalene may replace the toluene.
