Abstract

339,243. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Aug. 30, 1929. Caoutchouc, synthetic.-The polymerization of diolefines is effeeted in presence of alkali or alkaline earth metals or alloys' of them or of alkaline earth metal compounds with organic radicals which are not capable of ionization, the polymerizing agent being added gradually or in at least three fractions during the polymerization. Examples of suitable alloys are sodium-potassium, sodium-calcium, and sodium and potassium amalgams; and suitable organic compounds are sodium ethyl, potassium ethyl, potassium diphenylmethyl methane ((C6H5)2-CK-CH3), sodium triphenyl methane, potassium triphenyl methane, and lithium alkyls. The polymerizing-agents may be employed admixed with protective substances such as polymers of diolefines, rubber, paraffin, salt, or waxes. A part of the polymerizing-agent may be added to the diolefine at a temperature too low for any appreciable reaction, such as 0-10‹ C. Solvents such as hydrocarbons and ethers may be present. In the examples, (1) butadiene at 30‹ C. in an autoclave is treated with sodium which is pressed in the form of wire during 8 days; (2) sodium amalgam is added to butadiene at 0-6‹ C., and after two days the temperature is raised to 30-40‹ C. and sodium is added as described in the first example; (3) butadiene is mixed with a 1 per cent solution of potassium diphenylmethyl methane in ethyl ether, and further quantities of this solution are added after 12 hours and 3 hours respectively. Specification 307,308 (as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) is referred to.
