[Class 44] In a latch applicable generally but particularly described as for aircraft hatches, the bolt, or as described. a pair of bolts, can be retracted by either of two lever handles situated on opposite faces of the hatch &c. and independently connected to the bolt or bolts by links. The casing comprises two channel-section members 10 11 with flanges 12, 15 respectively connected, to the outer and inner panels 14, 16 of the hatch by rivets or other means are spaced apart by channel members 17 connected thereto and themselves spaced as shown to provide guide accommodation for a pair of rectangular bolts 18 with bevelled noses projecting through the edge of the hatch into co-operation with a striker 20. The bolts are shut by springs 22 surrounding reduced tail portions 21 of the bolts, and are connected by a cross-pin 23 on which are pivoted the ends of flat links 25, 26 disposed between the bolts. The other ends of the links diverge and are pivoted respectively to outside and inside lever handles 27, 34. Handle 27 pivoted at 28 is housed in a recess 29 formed in a cover plate 30 so that it lies flush with panel 14, the end of the recess having an enlargement which allows the end of the handle to be engaged by the hand and swing outwards to withdraw the bolts and, by continued pull on the handle, to open the hatch &c. The inner handle 34 pivoted at 35 projects as shown so as to be readily grasped and is pulled to retract the bolt and then pushed to open the hatch. The handles may be retained against accidental operation by ball-catches 32. Pin 23 may pass through slots in the links long enough to allow each handle to be operated without affecting the other. The casing may have an aperture at its lowest point to allow escape of water &c.
